Spotted today in Madison: someone towing a rather nice looking boat with a rusty, late-80s Ford Tempo GL coupe. I suppose they could’ve paid for the boat with the money saved by driving the Tempo.

Surprised it had the power to tow that boat...I would think that trailer/boat combo would be above the manufacturer tow rating...?

Fun fact: because boats are more aerodynamic than other items which are typically towed behind vehicles, it is generally safe to exceed the vehicle’s standard tow rating when towing a boat. Many vehicles have separate, higher tow ratings for boats vs. normal trailers.
(With how much the rear suspension of this Tempo was compressed though, it’s probably well past the approved tow rating.)

Really should have been towing it with a Topaz. And boats don’t weigh that much.

Ah yes, the Topaz, a fine example of the “let’s take a Ford and add a bunch of extra lights between the headlights” period of Mercury styling.

I saw an FD pulling a similarly sized boat two weeks ago near Anacortes, WA. No SR20, was driving government truck. Bad juju.

Did the Tempo even come with a tow rating?

Not sure if this is official or what, but I found a tow rating on trailers.com :
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I guess it did. Also, who tries to tow a trailer with a Taurus SHO? Because that almost sounds fun.

That’s how the Sable was, too. Today is the same mentality, but with Lincoln and lights between the taillights.

Normally it’s the SHO being towed, on a trailer.
Because they’re all beat-to-shit and broken now.

Not sure even how that thing can tow that boat.
